A Little Beach Shack

I love the beach but have never painted a beach scene. It is my first and it’s a great time of year to be thinking back on summer days. Ugh! Winter hasn’t even started. I drew the preliminary drawing on site back on a beautiful October morning then put it aside for a while. I finally got around to finishing it this week. It was funny, my kids asked me where this nice place was. It is only the shack we see as we enter the beach, we must have gone by it a hundred times! I mulled over this landscape the whole summer. I love the play of the sun on the weathered wood and sand. It turns it into various shades of gold making the shadows look so rich against it. The blue boat thrown on the side ready to be taken out, the flora in front. Whoever lives here must really enjoy this. A true beach lover, with bleached hair and tanned leathery skin, ready to set sail at a moment’s notice. Someone like me, having to lug everything from home, has to be benevolently jealous.

    You really set us back a few months with this beautiful summer painting. The colors are gorgeous and you probably made this shack much more eye catching than in reality...painters license:-)

Flying Colors

"Flying Colors" 28.5 x 20cm / 11" x  8"in.  I love the color of this blue jay's feathers and its stance, so graceful ... the various blues were hard to imitate. I am working on leaving more white areas in my painting and loosening up a bit. Thank you to Mim White for allowing me to use her photo! When I saw her photograph, I immediately imagined it as a watercolor painting.

Pansies

 Pansies with Lemon  watercolor on cold pressed Daler Rowney paper  10" x 10" / 25 x 25 cm.  Available I wished to paint the happy faces of the pansies I planted earlier in the fall. They are hardy plants, lasting through the winter on my balcony. Soon I will have to pull them out and replace them with petunias or begonias, but not for another month. I love the different shades of purple and had fun mixing my own. I hope everyone is having a nice week!
